Memorial Elementary’s Julie Lockhart was selected, for the second year, to be a Civic Scholar. The program is a statewide initiative to enhance high quality professional development in civic education for teachers. Mrs. Lockhart was nominated by Oregon Representative Jim Weidner, House District 24.

The program covers Oregon courts and current cases, the legislature and the executive branch with classroom-ready lessons, materials and ideas. Lockhart uses the “We The People” curriculum in her classroom.

“My class was able to experience a mock government, where all my students were part of one of the three branches of government,” said Lockhart. “They sent bills to the be voted on, and even voted for the President of the United States in our classroom voting booth, complete with a curtain!”
