Summer school programs begin across district

Summer school kicked off across the district today with some site accommodations for the summer bond work.

Consolidations include the elementary and middle school programs.  Patton students attend at Duniway; and Newby students attend at Columbus; Wascher students attend at Grandhaven; and Memorial students attend at Buel. Kindergarten Transition Camps for incoming students will also be consolidated. The camps run August 22 - 24 from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m.

“Our elementary program is intended to prevent summer learning loss ,” said Stephanie Legard, director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment for the McMinnville School District. “There is a lot of research that shows reading over the summer gives students a boost in coming back to school with stronger academic skills.”

Both elementary and middle school programs run Mondays through Thursdays through August 17. Summer school sites include breakfast and lunch, which are also open to any child 18 and under. Click here for more information on summer meals.

According to the National Summer Learning Association, all young people experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer, and most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over the summer months.
